The main design axis focused on eliminating the visual fragmentation of the spaces caused by the strong presence of both columns and beams. At the same time, the desire for a calm and warm environment was a fundamental requirement for the apartment’s design. A key design tool was the use of wooden cladding, running peripherally on the masonry like a zone that unfolds below the height of the beams. The lighting placed on the upper part of the cladding emphasizes this zone and blurs the boundary between cladding and beams, creating a sense of height in the space. Wooden claddings are placed in all common areas and sections of the room walls, accommodating furniture at certain points, following a cohesive design language throughout the apartment. The use of wood and natural dyes applied to the walls results in an earthy and familiar outcome. The palette of the design materials is completed with marble and black color, emphasizing elements of the design and adding dynamism to the final result. The kitchen is treated as a unit, where the island is a continuation of the black marble floor, while its closed cabinets are part of the common wooden furniture shared with the living room, unifying these two spaces.

External functions organized around the pool, such as the dining-BBQ area, outdoor living space, and sun loungers, create relaxation zones with an unobstructed view of the city. Design-wise, these are addressed with built-in structures that seem to unfold and project as sculptural elements in the space.

This project concerns a typical apartment of an apartment building of the 60s, in the centre of Thessaloniki. In this design, the minimum possible setbacks were made in order not to change the position of the main spaces and to unify the living area along the length of the apartment. In this way, a bright, airy, airy and brightly lit perimeter zone is achieved throughout the day. The other spaces, the rooms and the bathroom, remain in the second longitudinal zone formed.

The design of the furniture has played an important role in delineating both the functions and in unifying the living, dining and kitchen areas, acting as a filter where necessary. A key premise in the design was a minimalist approach to the spaces, to create a calm environment for the user through clean and simple forms. The choice of the combination of white with oak, combined with the design approach of the furniture, where oak is used as a frame holding white volumes, conveys a unified design approach and a warm atmosphere in the residence, enhanced by the wooden flooring.

As for the children’s bedroom, the proposal is for a room for two children, with a variation in the construction of the bunk bed, where the sleeping area is placed in the lower part and an additional play area is created in the upper part, in the form of a tunnel. The design has been approached in a child-centered way, fostering the development of gross motor skills, a sense of discovery, adventure and privacy. The office furniture has been approached by design as a single form, where the chairs are part of it and the child is put into a process of play in order to discover them. Their design has been done in such a way that they have storage space in their seat. The tones remain warm, trying to have a unified treatment with the rest of the apartment.

The proposal concerns the participation in the open complex architectural competition “Welfare Infrastructure and Neighborhood Park in the Municipality of Chania”, where the design of a crèche, a day care center for the elderly and a neighborhood park was requested.

The central idea of the proposal draws inspiration from the way children instinctively use space, and more specifically the schoolyard, as a dynamic field of creation, communication and development. The courtyard is translated as a nucleus for the birth of experiences in space, shaping its public image through individual and collective practices. The proposal is approached anthropocentrically by creating a core that activates and unifies the social character of the structures with the neighborhood, forming a stage where everyone can perform and produce a unique atmosphere in it, creating a bridge of communication and interaction.

The building set is approached as boundaries that allow the influx of movement inside the site, interrupting the contact where clear inward function takes place and creating intermediate thresholds of coexistence organized around a reference point. In this way, privacy is scaled without losing a sense of wholeness, both conceptually and design-wise. Based on the above, a centrifugal structure is organized by articulating a sequence of “courtyards”: the park, the nursery courtyard and the entrance plaza, upon which the sense of private and public is scaled at each scale.

In relation to the building complex, two buildings are proposed because the functions of the welfare structures concern two different age groups, which have basic differences in terms of their activities and needs for relaxation. It is proposed that the activity of the infants be protected and operate internally in relation to the other functions of the nursery, without being cut off from the whole. On the other hand, the activity of the elderly is based on extroversion, socialization and tranquility. The entrances of the two buildings are located in a common square of different levels. In it, urban facilities can be used by the users of the structures and the residents, enhancing the interaction and communication between them. In the southern part of the site, the park is developed, which is designed to serve some organized facilities for the residents of the neighborhood, such as urban gardens with aromatic plants and herbs offer the experience of engaging in gardening and organized space for children’s activities for physical, mental development and socialization. The nursery is organized around the courtyard, as a reference point for the children, but which also functions as the field of connection of all the above-mentioned open spaces, stimulating the sense of integration of the structures with the neighborhood within the plot. More specifically, the entrance of the nursery is located on the axis of the courtyards achieving their visual connection. Its functions are organized on the ground floor in a “Π” shape with a peripheral arcade, taking advantage of the southern orientation and the conceptual reference to the centrifugal element of the design, the courtyard. The courtyard can become part of the park, through the wet element that separates and at the same time unifies, allowing the life of the building to be united with the public, expanding its boundaries and offering an additional quality to children, that of participating on a larger scale, adapting it to their needs and enabling them to get involved and participate in the shaping of the public image.

Particular emphasis has been placed on bioclimatic and child-centered design. Bioclimatically, the proposal was approached through the creation of the building volume in Π with an arcade and large openings in the south for lighting and the exploitation of solar heat in winter, the use of a water element in the south for cooling in summer,
planting according to orientation, using evergreen trees in the north and deciduous trees in the south. Planting, has also been used as a tool to organize spaces for children through their seasonality, fruitfulness and symbolism. The constructions designed for the children have been based on developing their skills (such as gross, fine, balance, imagination, imitation) through their participation in the new spatial possibilities.

The multifunctional furniture for children is part of the design of the nursery, which was proposed within the framework of the open complex architectural competition “Welfare Infrastructure and Neighborhood Park in the Municipality of Chania”. The central idea of its design is the participation of the object both as a means in the educational process and in the development of the child, enhancing experiential and discovery learning.

It has been designed in such a way that it serves and meets the various needs of the educational program activities in the classroom, using their continuous rearrangements in the space. The shape of the furniture enables arrangements in linear, circular and free-form, offering alternating boundaries through a sense of introspection, isolation and integration. The choice of alternate furniture placements and the movement of the furniture through changing its bearings contributes to the development of children’s motor skills, their participation in collective classroom activities and their choice of personal isolation. At the same time, its abstract form and the possibility of acting from all sides, motivates the child to create a setting for every type of play (individual-team, creative, imitation, competition).

It consists of a triangle-shaped activity table with curved corners and a stool with its own storage space. The table has two sides, one colored and one blackboard. The stool can be placed inside the table structure, and all together can be placed lined up.

Within the framework of the P-Public 2013 festival, with the theme “Public space in evolution”, two play settings are proposed, which aim at developing experiential experiences in public space and initiating wandering walks through the fabric of the Old Town of Chania. These settings initially seek to cause surprise, the unexpected in the passer-by, the stimulus for the discovery of a different environment, his participation in the proposed activity, with the ultimate aim of diverting him from the initial route and creating a new path and wandering in the labyrinthine fabric of the Old Town. The interruption of his prescribed course, even if it is momentary, as well as his participation in the installed game, tends to release him from the spatial and temporal limits of his routine, creating a new situation in the public space.

Two points in the fabric of the Old Town are the starting point for this wandering, through two ephemeral installations that combine games of mimicry, vertigo, competition and chance (mimicry-ilinx-agôn-alea, as defined by Roger Caillois). At the starting point of the installations, a curtain invites the pedestrian to search, through surprise and wonder as to what lies behind. At the same time, it defines a space for scenario play development, as the pedestrian player can interact with the elements of the curtain based on his or her own scenario. Installation A, Dizzy tree, consists of a curtain of densely arranged ribbons, which defines the entrance to the interior of the web, but at the same time it is an unexpected image of the street. If the passer-by chooses to pass through to the interior, this path leads to a small square with a tree, on which a wooden swing has been placed, where he can watch or even participate in an energetic individual game of vertigo, leaving behind his originally prescribed path. Installation B, Bet on!, consists of a curtain of balloons, which have grains of different sizes inside them, creating a different timbre when the passerby passes or moves them voluntarily. Similarly, there follows an active competition-speed game, which can be either individual or team, in which the player can compose a path of wooden pallets in various formations according to the degree of difficulty that he alone or with his opponent will set. The termination of these installations ends at hubs in the web, where the person now plays a game of chance, choosing the exit route or the beginning of a new wandering.

These installations come to awaken us as pedestrians to the way in which we should experience public space and become part of it. Participating in the proposed playful activities or even simply observing them, leads to the creation of a new adventure-situation in public space, and comes to shake us up about how an everyday route, a simple passage, can hide spatial and temporal surprises.
